PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY AT NAU: AN OVERVIEW
Our department offers B.S. degrees in physics, astronomy, engineering physics, and physical science, dual majors in physics & astronomy and in physics & mathematics, and masters' degrees in applied physics and in science education.
The department has a small, family feeling. A graduate who recently completed his Ph.D. at a major research institution remarked that, while in graduate school, "the sense of community I felt while at NAU was something I very much missed". At NAU, your instructors will know you by name. They are easily accessible, and they genuinely care about student success. Lecture courses are taught almost exclusively by full-time faculty. Both undergraduate and graduate students are routinely and deeply involved in faculty research.
Our students have gone on to graduate studies at Cornell, Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Texas Austin, and other fine schools. Others work for Raytheon Corporation, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Keck Telescope Consortium, and many other quality employers.
Faculty carry out research in experimental and theoretical physics, astronomy and astrophysics, and physics education. This research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Research Corporation, and the Department of Defense.
Department-sponsored outreach and student programs include the National Undergraduate Research Observatory, NAU/NASA Arizona Space Grant Consortium, American Indian Mobile Educational Resources (AIMER) classroom, and an NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates program in astronomy.
From electrons to galaxies, our classroom is the cosmos. Join us: we're looking for a few good students!
